Te Ruunanga o Ngaati Mahuta ki te hauaauru Tahatika Application

MACA (Takutai Moana)

Te Ruunanga o Ngaati Mahuta ki te hauaauru has sought to have the mana moana o Te Tai Whatiwhati-aa-Kupe recognised. We have done so under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011. Our team has led this mahi on behalf of Ngaati Mahuta ki te hauaauru, Mahuta ki tai, and is working towards completing the process by mid-2025.

Located along the west coast of Waikato, the tribal estate spans the tahatika (seashore), starting at Te Ana a Puta Rocks in the south, up through to Te Tahaaroa a Ruapuutahanga, into Paringatai in the Kaawhia Harbour and ends at Te Puia Springs along Ocean Beach, Kaawhia. The coastline provides sustenance and safety to its people on the west coast of Waikato.

Te Takutai Moana Act 2011 recognises the customary interests of iwi, hapuu, and whaanau in Aotearoa's common marine and coastal area, including its offshore islands. The Act also guarantees the right of all New Zealanders to access and use the common marine and coastal area.

Te Ruunanga will provide MACA information on this page for our hapuu members over the coming months as we progress toward our application.  This will include hui-aa-hapuu and hui-aa-Moana to discuss our overlapping areas and seek resolutions to the challenges the MACA act has created.

If uri have any questions about MACA or the process to come, please get in touch with our team.
